Albert O. Maier, 101, of Bloomer, formerly of Eau Claire, died Friday morning, June 1, 2018 at Dove Healthcare in Bloomer.
Al was born January 29, 1917 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Alma A. (Maechtle) and Christ Maier.
On May 23, 1942, he married Ruby Malison in Jim Falls. They farmed for several years before moving to Elk Mound where they owned and operated Maier’s Grocery; then moved to Worthington, MN where they operated their own grocery store and Al worked as a salesman for a grocery company. They moved back to Elk Mound and again, owned and operated a grocery/hardware business before purchasing the Farmer Store in Colfax.
Following their retirement, Al and Ruby enjoyed 16 great years in Green Valley, Arizona. They moved to back to Wisconsin in 2004. Ruby preceded Al in death on November 8, 2013.
Al was a man of faith, and no matter where he lived, he attended the Methodist church in that area. For most of his life, until the age of 96, he was a Barbershop Singer. He enjoyed singing in many quartets, choruses and choirs over the years. Al loved to stay busy…well into his 90’s he carried a paper route for his apartment building in Eau Claire, and even when he went to live at the nursing home last November, would ask the staff if they needed help or if there was a job he could do. He liked to be around people and would often sit at nurses station to do his jobs of working quilt material and folding towels.
He is survived by a daughter, Carol Chrostowski of Bloomer; a son, Ralph (Diane) Maier of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Mike Maier, David (Tamie) Maier, Stacy (Randy) Schaefer, James (Lori) Price, and John Price; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruby; a sister, Loraine Dunlap; and three brothers, Marvin, Wesley and Courtney Maier.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 6 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls. Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the funeral chapel.
