Joann A. Ehlers

Joann Alice Ehlers, 95, of Chippewa Falls, died Friday, September 5, 2025, at the Chippewa Manor while under the care of Heartland Hospice.

She was born July 16, 1930 in Chippewa Falls to Casimir and Blanche (Carr) Augustine. The family moved to Marshfield, WI in 1931 and lived there until 1941, then moved back to Chippewa Falls.

Joann graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1948. After high school she worked at the Chippewa Herald-Telegram until 1951.

On May 19, 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Verlyn “Spike” Ehlers at Zion Lutheran Church in Chippewa Falls. She belonged to the Zion Women’s Society, LWML, Mission Circle, and was a charter member of the “Birthday Club.” She enjoyed sewing and counted cross stitch.

Joann is survived by her children, Kathy Jo Ehlers (Mike Smieding) of Eau Claire, Julie Ann (Ivan) Fercho of Holmen, WI, and David Roy (Michelle) Ehlers of Savage, MN; grandchildren, Haylie Jo (Matthew) Schmit, Lauren Marie (Trevor) Spranger, Nicholas Joseph (Kiersten) Ehlers and Drew William Ehlers; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Madeline, and Emma Spranger and Miles and Jordan Schmit; brothers, Richard (Deanna) Augustine and Ronald (Kay) Augustine.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Verlyn in 2016, and brother, James.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 11 at Zion Lutheran Church, Chippewa Falls with Rev. Brad Thomas officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. at the church.

Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Zion Lutheran Church.
