John W. Cooney

John W. Cooney, 71, of Chippewa Falls went home to be with the Lord under the care of St. Croix Hospice, on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Care Partners Assisted Living in Eau Claire.

John was born June 18, 1952, to John & Laura (Reiter) Cooney in Chippewa Falls, WI. He grew up in Chippewa Falls and graduated from McDonell High School. John worked a variety of jobs throughout his lifetime but the one he spoke of most often was being a First Responder and Fire-Fighter for the Altoona Fire Department.

He enjoyed serving the community in this way and valued the friendships he developed with the other fire-fighters over the years. John’s passion was in music. In his early years, he was a drummer in the Stone Free Band. In his later years, John loved playing drums with the music ministry team at Chippewa Valley Bible Church where he was a member for many years. John will be remembered for his ability to make others laugh. He had a witty sense of humor, and it didn’t take long for someone having a bad day, to laugh and have a better day. He loved sports, especially the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers.

John married Jill Malison on May 27, 1999. They had a very special relationship that was interwoven from the heart. Their special bond became even more treasured by John with Jill’s passing in 2016. He always spoke fondly of her and how he missed her and now they are together once again.

John is survived by two sons, Bill and Jeff Cooney (from a previous marriage); three siblings, Catherine (Joseph) Carroll, Tom (Maria) Cooney and Mary DeWitt; sisters-in-law, Sharon Malison, Joy (Alan) Moore, and Janell (Kenny) Briggs; brothers-in-law, Mark (Joyce) Malison and Joel (Cathy) Malison; and many special nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jill; his parents, John & Laura Cooney; brother-in-law, Tom DeWitt; parents-in-law, George & Jane Malison; sister-in-law, Julie (Malison) Kane; and brother-in-law, John (Sharon) Malison.

The funeral service will be at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at Chippewa Valley Bible Church, 531 E. South Ave, Chippewa Falls, WI 54729, with a visitation one hour prior to the service.
