Lyle J. Kelly, age 96, self-proclaimed “tough old bird”, passed away on April 30th at the Chippewa Manor with his sweetie by his side.
He was born to Tracy (Koepke) and Murray Kelly on September 6, 1927, along with his twin brother, Lee. Lyle spent his early years on “The Farm” in Eagle Point, WI, one of his favorite places. He attended Bartlett School, walking “uphill both ways”. He graduated from Chi-Hi and attended UW Madison for an agriculture program. One of the only times he left Wisconsin was when he was in the US Army, stationed in Germany from 1955-56.
Lyle was especially proud of the time he spent playing football with the Chippewa Marines, playing center at a whopping 155 pounds. He enjoyed any time he could be outside: in the garden, riding the John Deere, or at his beloved hunting cabin outside Cable, WI.
He worked for many years at NSP, retiring in 1988. That retirement lasted about 3 months before he picked up a few part-time jobs in the area.
Lyle is survived by his bride of almost 61 years, Jackie (Wolfe) Kelly; his favorite daughter, Kari (Bill) Leifheit; and favorite son, Joe (Jill Marie Schwieters) Kelly. His absolute favorite people were, of course, his grandkids: Max, Theo, and Nora Leifheit, and Josie and Jaime Kelly. He is also survived by his twin brother, Lee Kelly; sister, Marge Bjork; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sisters, Marilyn Lee and Lois Barnum; and brother, Keith Kelly.
Special thanks to the staff at the Chippewa Manner and Dr. Froehling for taking care of dad.
Lyle did not want any ceremony, and a private burial will be held. We suggest you remember him by taking a walk in the woods and enjoying an ice cream cone. His favorite was maple nut.
