Phyllis Arneson

April 3, 1921 — March 1, 2019

Phyllis L. Arneson, formerly of 18993 75th Ave., Chippewa Falls, died with the love of her family with her on Friday, March 1, 2019 at Wissota Dove in Chippewa Falls.  She was 97.

Phyllis was born on a farm in Winnebago County rural Joice, Iowa on April 3, 1921 to Florence (Nelson) and Otis Tweed.  She was the eldest child of seven.

She was baptized, confirmed, and married in Beaver Creek Lutheran Church in Joice, IA.

Phyllis attended Kittleson School, a country school, her first eight years of schooling.  She then graduated from Joice High School in 1938.

On September 3, 1939, she married Richard Arneson.  They were married for over 60 years, and had two children, Marshall and Emily.

Phyllis was active in Beaver Creek Church and later in Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, where she taught Sunday school many years and held various offices in women’s groups.  She also served on many committees besides holding offices in the school her children attended.

In 1963, at the age of 43, she decided to enroll in the LPN program at the local college in Mason City, IA.  She graduated from that program in 1964.  She worked in hospitals and nursing homes and later did private nursing duty.

Phyllis loved both dogs and cats and had several of each over the years.  She leaves behind Sully, her precious cat.

Phyllis like to fish during the years they lived on a lake in Minnesota.  She liked to reel them in but not to bait the hook or remove the fish when it was caught.  She always had some help with those things.  She also liked to travel – mostly around the U.S. and Canada.  She did attend a family reunion in Norway in 1993 and said that it was a perfect experience!

Her survivors are her daughter, Emily Quisling of Chippewa Falls; grandson, Matt (Wendy) Quisling of Altoona; granddaughter, Libby (Dean) Makemson of Chippewa Falls; six great-grandchildren, Annalee and Jeffrey Quisling, Haley, Ella, Jack and Marshall Makemson.  She is further survived by two great-great-grandchildren, Aiden and Aubie.  Our five generations are now four.

Her other survivors include her sisters, Lois Reinsmoen of Manly, IA and Dianne (Jim) Coburn of Reno, NV; two brothers, Herschel (Jean) Tweed of Scottsdale, AZ and Dennis (Dee) Tweed of Rochester, MN; a sister-in-law, Doris Tweed of Lake Mills, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her in-laws, E.G. and Mabel Arneson; her husband, Richard in 2000; her son, Marshall in 1959; a sister, Janell and brother-in-law, Richard Slattum; brother, James Tweed; brother-in-law, Orland Reinsmoen; niece, Laura Reinsmoen; and nephews, Jeffrey Slattum and Vincent Tweed.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, March 7 at Pederson-Volker Funeral Chapel, Chippewa Falls with Pastor Ron Clutter officiating.  Interment will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Phyllis’ family would like to thank the staff at Wissota Dove for the wonderful care and the sense of humor always present when entering Mom’s room.  Mom was a character.

We’d also like to say thank you to St. Joseph’s Hospice and to Staci, mom’s nurse, for the kindness and consideration at all times. We appreciate her care so much.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph’s Hospice or to the Chippewa County Humane Association.
