Sheldon "Shelly" Schneider

Sheldon “Shelly” Jacob Schneider, 88, of Chippewa Falls, passed away on July 13, 2025 at Mayo Hospital in Eau Claire.

He was born on August 3, 1936 to Arnold and Irene (Rubenzer) Schneider in Chippewa Falls, WI. He graduated from McDonell High School with the class of 1954. Shelly started working at Sokup’s Meat Market right out of school, where he would meet the love of his life, Dorothy. The family joke remains that she could not find a place to return him at the store, and thus is history.

On June 28, 1958, Shelly was united in marriage to Dorothy Hoepner at St. Charles Catholic Church in Chippewa Falls. Together they raised two children: Irene and Peter. Shelly held many different jobs throughout his life aside from Sokup’s, including the Chippewa Shoe factory for 10 years, Red Owl Grocery, Gordy’s IGA and Fleming Foods of LaCrosse. After retirement in 1995, as the hard-working man he was, Shelly continued to work for Crossmark part-time.

Shelly was a sportsman, through and through; Not only was he an avid baseball fan of the Cleveland Indians, Pittsburg Pirates and the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he spent countless hours on bowling and softball leagues throughout his life, and proudly managed the ladies’ softball team “Shelly’s Showoffs” – He was most notable for his left-handed “slow pitch” even though he had a right-handed swing. His left-hand pitch garnered him the nickname “Ol’ Lefty.” Shelly was an accomplished traveler, as he cherished family vacations and expanding his horizons with his family in tow. A treasured memory will forever be the road-trip through South Dakota and Yellowstone with eleven family members sharing an 8-person RV. Memories were made, and love shared abundantly over those many miles. In his older years, Shelly discovered a love for Bingo at the Homestead Senior Village where he resided with his many friends and loved a good black-and-white western, or “cowboy show.”

Shelly was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church for many years and found meaning in volunteer work with the veterans. He will truly be missed by all who knew him.

Shelly is survived by his children, Irene Glassbrenner of Chippewa Falls, and Peter (Cheryl) Schneider of Wausau; his grandchildren, Paul (Alicia) Schneider, Alicia (Steven Gunderson) Schneider, Samuel (Kim) Schneider, Philip (Becky) Xanatos, and Leah Schneider; his great-grandchildren, Madison S., Wren S., Bennett S., Bennett G., and Ivy S.; his beloved cats, Osiris and Pandora; along with many other beloved relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Schneider; his parents, Arnold and Irene Schneider; his step-mother, Doris Schneider; his brother, Donald Schneider; sister-in-law, Joanie Schneider; son-in-law, Layne Glassbrenner; and step-siblings, Helen Rineck, and David (Shirley) Pressler.

A Memorial Service for Shelly will take place on Friday, July 25, 2025 at St. Charles Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. Shelly will be laid to rest at Bateman Cemetery following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Charles Catholic Church or the Veteran’s Home in Chippewa Falls. The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dove Healthcare South and all those at the apartment building who prayed for Shelly.
