Steven A. Morrell

Steven Albert Morrell, 67, a loving father, grandfather, son, and brother, passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2023, at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI.

He was born on August 13, 1956, in Chippewa Falls to James and Darlene (Rasmus) Morrell. He grew up in Hallie and for a time was a boy scout during his youth. He graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1974 and then enrolled in the Chippewa Valley Technical College in the welding program. He then served in the U.S Army from 1976-1979.

Steve worked at various jobs throughout his life in the Chippewa Falls and Tomah areas. Steve enjoyed being around his friends and family over the years.

As a kid he enjoyed being outside, climbing trees, being with his brother and sister, and gardening with his maternal grandparents and parents. Steve was a very intelligent and quiet guy throughout his life, a man of few words. He was a thinker, he was a kind, loving and caring guy. Steve enjoyed spending time with his daughter exploring nature and taking her fishing when she was little. He also enjoyed participating in family get togethers where he was usually behind the video camcorder and helping coordinate the family movie making chaos. Steve had many wild ideas and thoughts throughout life. He had a tendency to think “outside the box”, be a rebel, and fly under the radar. He loved learning about anything nature, weather, science, space, paranormal, and extraterrestrial related things. He enjoyed listening to various radio shows, especially NPR, and feeding the wild birds.

Steve struggled with and battled addiction on and off for most of his adult life. He lived with various people who shared similar struggles and battles over the years. During these times he distanced himself from family, and lived the life of his choosing. Family attempted to help him many times, and yet he ultimately did what he wanted. The choices he made led to many health battles later in life. We believe that Steve is finally free from the mental and physical pain and struggles he has endured. We pray that he is now at peace and free from these struggles and battles.

Steve is survived by his father, James Morrell; daughter, Maurita (Nick) Burzynski; four grandchildren, Alex, Gabe, Theo, and Lily Burzynski; brother, John (Julie) Morrell; sister, Julie (Peter) Lea; nieces and nephews, Mitchel, Nick, and Parker Morrell, Zach Lea, Jenny (Brandon) Nelson, and Hannah (Matt) Riley; and many great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

We would like to extend our appreciation and thankfulness to the paramedics and many nurses, and doctors in Tomah, and Madison VA centers that cared for Steve and his chronic health issues recently, and over the previous years.

A family graveside service with Military Honors will be held at a later date at the Scandinavian Cemetery, Town of Woodmohr, Chippewa County.
