Born April 29, 1918 in the town of Grant, Dunn County to Myrtle (Bitney) and Oscar Hilson, he was raised on the family farm and graduated from Colfax High School in 1936. Gorman entered the U.S. Navy in Dec. 1941 serving on the Battleship USS Washington during WW II until being honorably discharged in Oct. 1945.
